What are liquid flow meters?

Liquid flow meters are used to measure, monitor and control the flow of liquids in industrial processes. Accurate flow measurement helps maintain stable process conditions, detect unexpected flow changes and improve the efficient use of water and other process liquids.

Mass Flow Online offers two complementary technologies for measuring liquid flow: the LIQUI-VIEW vortex flow meter for low-viscosity, water-like liquids and the MAG-VIEW magnetic flow meter for water and other electrically conductive liquids. Definition and importance of liquid flow measurement

What is liquid flow?

Liquid flow describes the volume of liquid that passes through a pipe or measuring point during a defined period. It is commonly expressed in units such as litres per minute (l/min) or cubic metres per hour (m³/h). A higher flow rate means that a larger volume of liquid passes through the system in the same period.

Typical output signals

Depending on the selected model, LIQUI-VIEW and MAG-VIEW flow meters can provide an analogue 4–20 mA signal or frequency output. These signals allow the flow meter to be connected to a PLC, display, data logger or process control system.

The conductivity of the liquid is an important selection criterion.
A MAG-VIEW requires an electrically conductive liquid. For low-viscosity, water-like liquids where conductivity may not be the primary selection factor, a LIQUI-VIEW vortex flow meter can be a suitable alternative.

Vortex flow meterThe LIQUI-VIEW Base series uses the vortex measuring principle. A bluff body positioned in the liquid creates a repeating pattern of vortices. The frequency of these vortices is proportional to the liquid velocity. A piezoelectric sensor detects the vortices and converts them into an electrical signal that represents the flow rate.

LIQUI-VIEW is designed for monitoring low-viscosity, water-like liquids. The compact and lightweight construction makes it suitable for installations where available space is limited.

MAG-VIEW magnetic flow meters

Magnetic Flow MetersMAG-VIEW flow meters operate according to the magnetic-inductive measuring principle. A magnetic field is generated around the measuring tube. When an electrically conductive liquid moves through this field, a voltage is induced. This voltage is measured by electrodes and is proportional to the average flow velocity of the liquid.

Because the MAG-VIEW has no moving parts and a free pipe cross-section, it can be used in applications where mechanical flow sensors are less suitable. The compact construction also supports installation in machines and systems with limited space.
